(new york, usa)

in the meantime i've got a list of some favorites of 2008, in no particular
order

"Caxangá" - live performance by Elis
Regina with Milton Nascimento from a 1976 Brazilian TV show
i've been obsessed with elis regina lately and this video had me transfixed
- she is magnetic, milton is beautiful, and the song itself is much
better than the album version.
"Love Will Tear Us Apart" - Susanna
and the Magical Orchestra
i only discovered susanna and the magical orchestra very recently with
this joy division cover, and i'm completely in love with them. susanna
sings every word slowly with such fragile intensity and heartbreak,
laying out bare the emotional depth of ian curtis's poetry. she's fully
made the song her own and i think it's brilliant.
the making of my new record with Eva Puyuelo !!!!!!!
"River of Life / The Yes Song" - Mia
Doi Todd
i love the warmth of this song, the words, mia's voice..
"Wild Combination" - documentary about
Arthur Russell
everyone should see this. it's a reverent portrait of arthur russell's
genius and musical purity, and it's a beautiful piece of film-making
in and of itself.
"Pearl's Dream" - Brokeback
i've owned this record since its release and i recently got into it
again. been listening to this track a lot - with mary hansen from stereolab
on vocals. hers is a voice that i really miss.
"Third" - Portishead
they're still amazing. i wore this record out when i first got it. unexpected
turns of sound and melody - often cold and harsh - and beth gibbons'
haunting soulfulness... it all works together to create something really
new.
